Many shoppers choose cash on delivery because they want to pay when an order arrives. A common assumption is that COD also lets you open the parcel, check the product and then decide whether to pay. That is not a rule you should rely on. Whether inspection is allowed depends on the merchant, product and courier process, so ask before you place the order.

The practical distinction is between checking the parcel’s outside and opening the product packaging. A courier may let you verify the shipping label or visible condition while still requiring payment before handing over the parcel. A seller may have a specific inspection process for some orders and not others. Get the answer in writing from the merchant’s official channel.

What to ask the seller before ordering

Send a short message and ask:

  • Can I inspect the outer parcel before paying?
  • May I open the courier packaging, or must payment happen first?
  • If inspection is permitted, can I open the manufacturer’s sealed box or only the outer wrapper?
  • What should I do if the parcel is visibly damaged, wet, resealed or missing a listed item?
  • If I refuse delivery, will there be a charge or account restriction?
  • How do I report a wrong or defective item after delivery, and what is the deadline?

Ask the seller to state exactly what “check before payment” means. It may only mean confirming the name and parcel condition, not powering on an electronic device, trying on clothes or opening a hygiene seal.

At delivery Safe next step
Label and parcel look correct Confirm the order details and follow the courier’s payment instructions
Parcel looks crushed, torn, wet or resealed Photograph it and call the merchant through its official contact before accepting
Product inspection is not permitted Pay only if you are comfortable with the written return process; otherwise ask about refusal terms
Wrong item is visible through a transparent package Do not assume the courier can approve a return; contact the seller and follow its process
You find a problem after opening Photograph the item and packaging, preserve all labels, and submit a report promptly

COD does not remove the need to check return terms

If the product is wrong, damaged or incomplete, the official order page is usually the place to report it. Read the seller’s policy before paying online or choosing COD: eligible reasons, return deadlines, packaging requirements, courier collection and refund method can differ. Othoba’s published policy, for example, tells customers to return a package to the delivery agent immediately when an item is missing, damaged or wrong. That instruction belongs to Othoba’s process and should not be assumed for another seller.

Keep the invoice, parcel label and product packaging until you have checked the contents. For higher-value orders, record the opening of the parcel in one continuous video if practical; this can help document the condition, though it does not guarantee a claim will be approved. Follow the merchant’s evidence requirements.

Protect your payment and account

Pay the amount shown in the official order details. If the courier asks for a different amount, pause and verify it with the merchant using the number or support option on its official site. Never share a wallet PIN, bank OTP or card security code. A delivery person should not need your account password to complete a COD order.

Frequently asked questions

Can I always open a COD parcel before paying in Bangladesh?

No. There is no universal rule to rely on for every seller and courier. Confirm the exact inspection process before ordering.

If the seller says “open box delivery,” can I test the product?

Ask what is included. It may allow an outer-package inspection but not opening a sealed retail box or using the item. Get the permitted inspection steps in writing.

Can I refuse a COD order if the parcel looks damaged?

The seller’s and courier’s procedures apply. Photograph the condition, contact the official support channel and ask how refusal should be recorded. Check any stated refusal fee or restriction.

What if I discover a defect after I pay?

Use the order page to report it as soon as possible, attach photos or video, retain the packaging and follow the merchant’s deadline and return instructions.
