An air conditioner that is too small may run for long stretches without cooling the room comfortably. A unit that is larger than the room needs can cost more up front and may not be the most efficient choice either. In Bangladesh, the right AC depends on more than floor area: sunlight, floor level, windows, insulation, how many people use the room and how long the unit runs all matter.

Use this guide to shortlist a suitable capacity, compare inverter and non-inverter models, and check the installation and warranty costs before you pay.

Start with the room, not the brand

Measure the room’s length and width, then multiply them to estimate the floor area in square feet. A 12-by-12-foot room, for example, has 144 square feet of floor area. That gives you a starting point, not a final specification. Ceiling height, an exposed west-facing wall, large sunny windows, a top-floor roof, weak insulation or several occupants can increase the cooling load.

Walton’s Bangladesh AC guide gives the following approximate capacity bands for residential split ACs. The brand also provides a BTU calculator that asks about room size, exposed walls, wall type, floor position, windows, doors and occupants. Use the table as a preliminary screen; it is not a universal engineering rule.

Approximate room area Example capacity shown in Walton’s guide
Up to 100 sq ft 0.75 ton
Up to 120 sq ft 1 ton
Up to 150 sq ft 1.25 ton
Up to 180 sq ft 1.5 ton
Up to 240 sq ft 2 ton
Up to 300 sq ft 2.5 ton

Capacity should be confirmed for the actual room and model. In the product specifications, compare cooling capacity in BTU per hour as well as the ton label. Do not assume that two models with the same tonnage have identical efficiency, controls or power consumption.

What room conditions matter in Bangladesh?

A small room under a hot roof may need a different assessment from the same-sized shaded room on a middle floor. Count the windows, note which direction they face, and consider whether the walls receive direct afternoon sun. A room with an open kitchen, frequent door use or several people also gains heat faster.

If you are choosing an AC for a rented flat, ask the landlord about drilling, outdoor-unit placement, drainage and any building rules before ordering. In an apartment, the outdoor condenser needs a safe, ventilated location that a technician can access. A suitable model can still perform poorly if the hot-air outlet is blocked or the indoor unit is placed where air cannot circulate.

Inverter vs non-inverter AC

An inverter AC varies compressor speed to match the cooling demand. A non-inverter model generally cycles the compressor on and off to maintain the set temperature. Inverter models can be more economical during long, steady use, but actual electricity use depends on the exact model, room load, thermostat setting, maintenance and hours of operation. A large energy-saving claim is not a guarantee of a particular monthly bill.

Compare the product label and official specification sheet for rated input power, cooling capacity and any published efficiency metric. Also consider the purchase-price difference. If you use the AC only occasionally, a higher-priced inverter model may take longer to justify its upfront cost. If it runs for many hours most days, efficiency deserves more weight in the comparison.

Set the temperature to a comfortable level rather than expecting the lowest setting to cool a room faster. Keep doors and windows closed while the AC is running, clean filters as instructed, and avoid covering the indoor or outdoor airflow. These habits help the unit work as intended regardless of brand.

Split AC, portable unit or another setup?

Wall-mounted split ACs are common in Bangladesh homes because the indoor unit is quiet and the heat-exchanging outdoor unit sits outside. They require a proper mounting position, pipe route and drainage. A portable AC may need less permanent wall work but still needs an exhaust route and may be less suitable for rooms where that setup is awkward. Window units are less common in some newer apartments and require a compatible opening.

Before settling on a type, check what your building allows and what the installation package includes. A low product price can exclude brackets, extra copper pipe, electrical work, core drilling, outdoor-unit mounting or delivery to an upper floor.

Calculate the full installation cost

Ask for a written installation quote before buying. Confirm whether standard pipe length, drain pipe, bracket, wiring, circuit breaker and wall drilling are included. Ask what an extra metre of copper pipe costs and whether moving the outdoor unit to a more practical location changes the charge.

Have the installer check the electrical line and circuit capacity. Do not assume an existing socket is appropriate for every AC. For a new installation, ask who is responsible for testing drainage and cooling before the technician leaves, and whether the installer is authorized by the brand if that is required for support or warranty.

Warranty and service matter as much as the feature list

A warranty headline can refer only to the compressor or another part, while the full unit has a shorter warranty. Check the coverage for the compressor, PCB, coil, labour and service visit separately. Read the exclusions, especially installation and electrical conditions. Samsung Bangladesh, for example, lists a 12-month AC warranty and separate compressor coverage for products purchased in Bangladesh on its warranty page; the exact terms depend on product and purchase date.

Ask whether the model is sold through an authorized local channel, what proof of purchase you need, where to request service, and whether installation is included or charged separately. Use the brand’s service-centre locator or local support page to see whether help is practical from your area. For other brands, check their own Bangladesh warranty policy rather than assuming the same coverage.

AC buying checklist

  • Measure the room and note ceiling height, top-floor position, sun exposure, windows and occupants.
  • Use the manufacturer’s capacity guide as a shortlist, then ask for model-specific advice if the room is unusually hot or open-plan.
  • Compare cooling capacity, rated input power and efficiency information on the exact model.
  • Decide whether the potential running-cost benefit of an inverter model fits your expected hours of use.
  • Add installation, copper pipe, bracket, wiring, breaker and delivery to the total price.
  • Confirm outdoor-unit placement and drainage with your landlord or building manager if needed.
  • Read the exact warranty card and keep the invoice and installation record.

A sensible choice for your home

The right AC is the one sized for the room and installed correctly, with a service route you can actually use. Start with measurements and room conditions, compare the full running and installation costs, then shortlist brands and features. Ask the seller to confirm the model code and the complete warranty in writing. That approach is more useful than buying by tonnage, discount or brand name alone.
