Searching for a flight from Dhaka or another Bangladeshi city can show the same route on an airline website and several travel apps. The lowest number on the first results screen may not be the lowest or easiest booking after baggage, payment charges, date-change rules and support are included.
The practical choice is between booking directly with the airline and booking through an online travel agency (OTA). Neither route is automatically right for every trip. Compare the fare conditions and decide who you want to contact if plans change.
Airline website vs travel app: the difference
| Booking route | Often suits | Advantages to compare | Questions to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Airline website or ticket office | Travellers who want to manage the booking with the carrier | Direct access to the airline’s flight information and manage-booking tools | Does the exact fare include baggage? What are the change and refund rules? Which payment methods are accepted? |
| Bangladesh travel app or online agency | Travellers who want to compare carriers or use a local booking platform | Search across options, local payment choices and a support channel through the agency | What service or convenience fees apply? Who processes changes and refunds? How long can refunds take? |
| Physical travel agent | Travellers who want face-to-face help or need a more complex itinerary | A person can help review the itinerary and ticket details | Is the agent authorized, what is the total written price, and who will be the ticket issuer? |
The final airline rules still matter whichever route you use. An OTA can add its own process or service fee, so read both the fare conditions and the booking platform’s terms.
Compare the final amount, not the search result
The fare shown in a search can change as seats sell or taxes and add-ons are included. Before payment, look at the final amount for every passenger and check what is included. Compare the same itinerary, cabin, fare family and baggage allowance; a lower price may be for a more restrictive ticket.
Check the following before deciding:
- Total price after taxes, payment or convenience fees.
- Checked baggage and cabin baggage allowance for the exact route and fare.
- Seat selection, meals or other paid extras, if you need them.
- Whether the fare can be changed and what airline charges or fare differences apply.
- Whether cancellation is allowed and how a refund is calculated.
- Whether the platform has a separate service fee or processing step.
Biman’s official baggage allowance page says the applicable allowance can vary by route and fare class and tells travellers to use the allowance shown for the ticket. Use the airline’s route-specific baggage lookup rather than a general social-media post.
Who handles changes and refunds?
This is one of the biggest differences between direct booking and using an agency. Biman’s current booking and refund FAQ says cancellation and changes are subject to the fare rules and that tickets issued by a travel agent or online travel agent normally need to be processed through the issuing agent. Its refund and change policy also distinguishes tickets issued through Biman’s own site from those issued by an agent or travel portal.
Bangladeshi OTAs publish their own processing instructions and charges. For example, ShareTrip’s flight cancellation help page says the airline’s cancellation rules apply and describes an additional platform service fee. These terms can change, so check the current fee on the booking you are making. GoZayaan’s refund policy also says flight refunds follow the airline’s cancellation and reissue policy and are reduced by applicable charges.
Before paying through an agency, save the exact rules shown for your ticket and note the support channel, office hours and expected refund process. Ask whether a cancellation request goes to the airline immediately or must first be reviewed by the agency. If you booked directly, save the airline’s ticket number, PNR and manage-booking page.
Enter passenger details exactly
Use the spelling and order of names shown on the passenger’s passport for international travel and the accepted identity document for domestic travel. Check every passenger’s name, date of birth and contact information before confirming. Correcting an issued ticket can be restricted or charged, and rules vary by airline and fare.
After payment, confirm that you have received an issued e-ticket with a ticket number, not only a payment receipt or booking request. Check the airline’s website or official support channel to verify the PNR and flight details. Save the itinerary offline, along with the agency’s contact details if an OTA issued the ticket.
Domestic vs international booking checks
For domestic flights in Bangladesh, compare the airport, flight time, included baggage and the ticket’s change rules. Consider whether your ground transport can reach the airport in time, particularly for an early departure or late arrival.
For international travel, verify passport name and validity, visa or transit requirements, baggage for each flight segment and any separate-ticket connection risk. If an itinerary combines different airlines or separate tickets, ask who is responsible if the first flight is delayed and you miss the next one. Do not assume a connection is protected just because the app shows both flights in one search.
Are discounts and payment offers worth it?
A card or mobile-wallet campaign can reduce the cost, but read its eligibility conditions before you choose a platform. Some offers apply only to a particular bank card, minimum spend, booking channel, route or travel date. Check the discount cap, whether it applies to the full fare or only part of it, and whether booking fees are excluded. Compare the price after the offer with the same ticket booked elsewhere.
Never send a card PIN, wallet PIN or one-time verification code to a travel agent over chat or phone. Enter payment information only in the checkout flow of the airline or platform you selected, and keep the payment receipt.
A flight-booking checklist for Bangladesh
- Search the airline and at least one local booking platform for the same itinerary.
- Compare final price, baggage, fare type, change rules and cancellation charges.
- Read the airline rules plus any OTA service fee or refund process.
- Enter passenger names and travel-document details carefully.
- Check the PNR and ticket number with the airline after payment.
- Save the itinerary, fare conditions, receipts and support contact details.
- Recheck baggage and flight status close to departure using the airline’s official site.
Which booking route should you use?
Book directly when you prefer one point of contact with the airline and the direct fare is competitive. Use a local travel app when its comparison tools, payment options or support are useful and its final price and refund terms are clear. For complicated journeys, compare how each route handles changes and missed connections before you pay. The best booking is the one whose fare rules you understand and whose support channel you can reach.
