0% EMI in Bangladesh: What to Check Before Buying a Phone or Laptop
Check whether a zero-percent EMI offer really costs less after product eligibility, cash price, tenure and any processing charges.

An offer marked “0% EMI” can make an expensive phone or laptop easier to pay for over time. But the label does not answer every cost question. The eligible product, bank card, minimum purchase, installment duration and price used for the EMI calculation can all affect the total.
Before accepting an installment plan, compare the total EMI price with the cash price for the same product. Check the retailer’s terms and your card issuer’s terms, then confirm the installment amount and number of payments before you place the order.
What “0% EMI” should mean in the offer
A true zero-interest installment plan divides an eligible purchase into equal payments without interest for the stated tenure. It does not automatically mean that every cost is zero. A merchant may have a different EMI price, a minimum spend, a selected-product list, an eligible-card list or a limit on the number of months.
For example, Star Tech’s EMI terms list online and outlet eligibility, participating banks and minimum purchase conditions. The page also says its special or discounted prices may not apply to EMI, and that regular prices may be used for the installment calculation. Check the current wording on the product and offer page before relying on this detail.
Ryans publishes its own EMI facility information. A participating-bank list on one retailer’s site does not guarantee that the same bank, tenure or product qualifies at another retailer.
Your 0% EMI checklist
| Question | What to confirm |
|---|---|
| Is the product eligible? | Exact model, variant and any listed exclusions |
| Which card qualifies? | Issuing bank, card type and available credit limit |
| What is the minimum purchase? | Cart value required before the EMI option appears |
| Which tenures are available? | Number of months for online or outlet purchases |
| Which price is financed? | Regular price, special price, or a separate EMI price |
| Are there fees? | Processing, conversion, early settlement or bank charges |
| When does EMI start? | Transaction conversion timing and first statement date |
| What happens after a return? | Installment cancellation, refund timing and related bank steps |
The retailer explains its checkout and merchant conditions. The bank controls card eligibility, statement treatment and some charges. For example, BRAC Bank’s electronics partner terms state that product eligibility and merchant conditions can apply, and that the merchant may decide whether another offer can be combined. Read both sides before paying.
Compare the EMI total with the cash price
Suppose a hypothetical laptop costs ৳90,000 at a discounted cash price, while the EMI calculation uses a regular price of ৳100,000 over 10 months. The monthly amount may appear as ৳10,000 with no interest, but the total is still ৳10,000 more than the cash price. If a fee applies, add it too.
Use:
EMI total = monthly installment × number of months + processing or other charges
Then compare:
EMI difference = EMI total − current cash price for the same product
A zero-interest plan can still be convenient, but convenience and lowest total cost are different questions. Confirm that the cash price and EMI price refer to the same model, seller, warranty and product condition.
Check how the offer works at checkout
Select the exact product and open the payment options. Some merchants show EMI only after a qualifying card is selected. Others require the customer to call, visit an outlet or wait for the bank to convert the transaction. Read the details before authorizing payment.
Check whether the installment amount shown is monthly or total. Confirm the full tenure and any processing fee. Keep the order confirmation, invoice and bank SMS or email showing the installment setup. If the conversion does not appear as expected, contact the merchant and bank promptly using their official support channels.
If you plan to use a coupon or cashback too, verify whether the terms allow it. Star Tech’s EMI terms, for example, distinguish EMI pricing from special or discounted pricing. Do not assume an offer combination until the final payable amount and installment total are clear.
Who might benefit from EMI?
EMI can help a shopper spread a planned purchase across monthly budgets when the product is necessary, the terms are clear and the payment fits future income. It may be less attractive if the EMI price removes a discount, the card limit is needed for other expenses, or the monthly payment continues longer than the product’s useful life.
Avoid taking an installment plan only because a banner says “0%”. Decide what product you need, whether you can repay each month and what happens if your circumstances change.
